Canadian Blood Services is looking for bookings for its first blood clinic in Fort Frances for 2001.
The clinic will run at Fort Frances High School on Wednesday, May 2 from 4-8:30 p.m. and again Thursday, May 3 from noon to 3 p.m. and 5-9 p.m.
Organizers hope area residents will call or e-mail the CBS in Winnipeg to set up an appointment.
“It has been a boon for donors, they’ve been saving a lot of time,” said Michael Hyduk, communication specialist for the CBS. “There’s no line-up that way.”
This will be the second year donors can avoid line-ups by calling 1-888-222-6575 or e-mailing 94blood@bloodservices.ca although walk-in donors are still accepted.
“We’re not going to turn people away from walking in. They may have to wait a bit but we will accommodate them as quickly as possible,” said Hydak.
The goal for this first clinic is 370 local donors–150 on Wednesday and 220 on Thursday–to meet blood demand.
“It’s very important again,” said Hyduk. “We’re going into the month of May and we’ve got a long weekend so we’re missing one day [of blood collection].
“And we’re always seeing shortfalls because on the long weekend there’s more traffic, more accidents, and more blood needed.
“The blood supply is just like every other week, it’s low in type O,” he added. “That’s because it’s the universal blood type.”
