Boileaus named ‘Citizens of Year’

Jean and Lin Boileau have been chosen as the 2002 “Citizens of the Year” following unanimous approval by town council at last night’s regular meeting.
“There were many excellent nominations this year. Choosing the ‘Citizen of the Year’ is one of the hardest jobs you can have,” said Coun. Deane Cunningham, who sat on the selection committee.
“But in the end, the committee unanimously chose the Boileaus,” he noted. “They’ve been very hard workers in the community for many years.
“Their nomination was appropriate, and their being named ‘Citizen of the Year’ was well-deserved,” Cunningham said.
“My congratulations to the Boileaus, and thanks to the members of the [selection] committee for going through this exercise,” Mayor Glenn Witherspoon said.
The selection committee, consisting of Coun. Cunningham, former “Citizens of the Year” Bill Gushulak and Mark Kowalchuk, and Mayor Witherspoon, saw about 20 nominations, some of which were duplicates.
As in past years, the identities of the other nominees will not be revealed.
The Boileaus will be officially honoured at the town’s annual appreciation banquet Nov. 29 at La Place Rendez-Vous, but first are expected to appear in the Santa Claus parade here Nov. 23.
Last year’s “Citizen of the Year” was John McTaggart.
