The Rainy River Valley Field Naturalists are warning local snowmobilers and ATV riders that the Cranberry Peatlands Bog Walk Interpretive Trail at the end of Whitmore Road in Alberton is not an access point to the main trail.
“The trail is about 980 feet in length and is entirely made of boards [mostly local cedar],” noted Henriette Verhoef, citing that because it is a boardwalk, its use is restricted by bylaw to pedestrian traffic only.
The warning comes after an area man notified that Times on Friday afternoon that he had been walking along the trail that morning when he went through an inch of ice at that access point.
He wanted snowmobilers to be cautious of the thin ice.
“There was never any intention that trailhead be used as an access point for snowmachines,” Verhoef stressed, noting that at no point does the trail cross over the ice.
“And while local people and visitors alike are encouraged to come out and enjoy the trail, people are reminded to stay safe and stay on the trail while they enjoy this ecologically-sensitive area,” she added.
