The Rainy River District School Board tonight will present Riverview School staff with its monthly “Recognition of Excellence” for their spirit of collaboration to improve EQAO scores.
Three years ago, the Rainy River school’s test scores were nowhere near where they wanted them to be.
Upon reflection and a great deal of honest discussion, the staff knew the path they needed to take.
It was articulated within the School Improvement Plan, with the major focus on writing.
With the support of Student Support Services, School-Wide Professional Learning Communities, involvement in a number of board-wide projects such as the Student Work Study Teacher, and teacher collaboration, they started the journey they’ve been on for the past three years.
The successes have been reflected in the students’ EQAO scores in reading, writing, and math.
For example, Grade 3 students’ scores in reading increased from seven percent in 2009-10 to 43 percent in 2011-12 while Grade 6 students improved their writing scores from 46 percent in 2009-10 to 75 percent in 2011-12.
“The collaborative spirit that developed amongst staff has provided a rich, consistent environment for all of our students,” the report noted.
“The staff has worked extremely hard to instil independence and a sense of ‘You can do it’ in the students at Riverview,” it added.
Also at tonight’s meeting, which gets underway at 7 p.m. at Rainy River High School, the board will:
•hear a presentation about aboriginal education initiatives;
•look at approving a number of policies;
•receive the latest EQAO results; and
•be updated on the Sturgeon Creek School Accommodation Review Committee meetings from Sept. 10 and Sept. 25.
