The Northwest Catholic District School Board will discuss the proposal to name the two soccer pitches at the St. Francis Sportsfield after the late Struchan Gilson during its regular monthly meeting tomorrow.
Gilson, a former town councillor, was active in promoting soccer locally over the years, including helping to bring it to Fort Frances High School.
Town council approved the recommendation in early December, and now is seeking approval from the Catholic board as per the joint use agreement.
Also at tomorrow’s meeting, St. Francis teacher Solange Busch will be presented with a recognition of excellence for her efforts this past fall in bringing the nation-wide “Student Vote” project to the school.
“Student Vote” allowed the students to participate in a parallel vote in conjunction with last October’s federal election as a way to teach them about the voting process and encourage democratic participation.
Also receiving recognition of excellences will be St. Francis student Emily Hyatt, along with teachers Lisa George and Colette Fafard.
The three will be recognized for their efforts to bring students from all grade levels together through various events and activities, made possible by securing a “Speak Up” grant from the provincial government.
One of those events included a winter carnival held back on March 13.
Also scheduled to make a presentation to the board is Linda Plumridge on behalf of the district’s diversity committee.
She will highlighting the committee’s history, aims, goals, and future possibilities.
Tomorrow’s meeting gets underway at 9:30 a.m. in the library at St. Francis School.
