During the course of a recent internal investigation at the Rainy River District School Board, an issue was identified.
The police were contacted to formally investigate the concern, and school board administration recognized the need for corrective measures.
At its regular meeting held June 4, the board approved a motion to meet in-camera to consider the personnel matter.
The findings were discussed, and the personnel matter was dealt with internally.
“Yes, there was an item missing from the equipment inventory,” said board chair Mike Lewis.
“Yes, the police were brought in to investigate. The missing item was located and returned.
“There were financial consequences for the person responsible for the missing item,” Lewis added.
“The matter of consequences is one addressed by internal discipline, and is not for public consumption.”
Lewis said if there are charges to be laid, that is a matter for the police and the Crown.
“The board takes very seriously any matter where public property or funds are misappropriated or unaccounted for,” he stressed.
In order to detect and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse, the board has reviewed and revised policies, and
administration has continued to implement and improve strategies.
The board recognizes that the news about the recent investigation may cause distress among community members, and wants to reassure you that the control systems put in place over the past three years are proving to be effective in revealing instances of concern.
