The Rainy River District School Board will receive $5.17 million from the Ministry of Education’s Capital Priorities program to consolidate Rainy River High School and Riverview Public School within a renovated Rainy River High School.
The ministry also approved the board’s contribution of $4.9 million for the project.
The renovated school will accommodate students from JK-Grade 12, and will include an expansion of the gymnasium and enclosure of the courtyard.
Consolidation in a renovated school will allow for implementation of cost-effective strategies, account for declining enrolment and under-utilization of facilities, and address renewal needs and aging infrastructure.
With the continued inclusion of the “Best Start” Hub, Seven Generations Education Institute, Confederation College, and Contact North within the facility, students and their families will see this newly-renovated school as a community school, supporting children as they transition from pre-school to elementary school to high school and then to post-secondary.
Since both schools are within each other’s attendance zone, the board was not required to undertake an accommodation review.
“We would like to acknowledge the Ministry of Education for their support of this project,” said Director of Education Heather Campbell.
“A renovated facility, providing current and future students with learning opportunities in cutting-edge specialized spaces, will be beneficial to student achievement and well-being,” she noted.
