The Rainy River District School Board has approved a recommendation to consolidate Atikokan High School and North Star Community School into a new kindergarten-Grade 12 school on the Atikokan High School site, pending Ministry of Education funding approval.
Board administration also was directed to assess the potential of creating the proposed facility to include an additional gymnasium that includes a stage, given the community’s support for such space over an enhanced sports field.
The board also agreed it will work within the 2017-18 school year to secure community partners to utilize the North Star school as a community asset.
The decision was made at a special board meeting held last Wednesday night at Atikokan High School.
It follows the conclusion of the modified Student Accommodation Review process that began in April and included committee meetings, a municipal and community partners meeting, a public consultation, and delegations to the board.
“We thank everyone who participated in this modified Student Accommodation Review process,” said board chair Dianne McCormack.
“The input brought forth was greatly appreciated as it helped guide our decision,” she noted.
