‘Blue box’ pick-up has resumed

Town residents should be putting out both their garbage and “blue boxes” this week as the new bi-weekly curbside pick-up schedule is now in effect.
Residents should have received the new garbage/recycling schedules in their mailboxes over the past few weeks as these were supposed to be delivered by the Fort Frances Aquanauts over the Christmas break.
But if you didn’t, you still can pick them up at the Civic Centre, the Public Works building on Fifth Street West, or Asselin Transportation and Storage (Highway 11/71).
The “blue box” curbside pick-up was stopped from Dec. 22-Jan. 4 for the holidays.
As previously reported, the new schedule—approved by council at its Dec. 8 meeting—will see “blue boxes” picked up using the same five-day cycle as the town’s garbage collection, but only on a bi-weekly basis.
This was decided based on the rationale that homeowners are accustomed to the five-day cycle for garbage collection. As such, it’s more convenient for homeowners to put waste and recycling materials out for collection on the same day, he noted.
That, in turn, hopefully will boost participation in the “blue box” program.
It also will mean an estimated cost savings of about $25,000 per year—22 percent of the town’s annual recycling costs.
Just as in the past year, acceptable recyclables will continue to include paper bags, newsprint, office paper, magazines in small quantities, corrugated cardboard (cut to 16” x 20” max.), #1 and #2 plastics, clean aluminum/steel beverage cans, and clean metal food cans (rinse, remove labels, and crush).
Glass recyclables still can be dropped off in the large blue bins on Wright Avenue North by the Public Works building.
