The “Block Parent” program here looks like it will be a “go” after all. Several person have stepped forward to fill positions on the board late last week.
Beating yesterday’s deadline, Sandra Whalen stepped up to fill long-time chairperson Cathy Sinninghie’s shoes–a decision that thrilled the decade-long head of the program.
“I’m really excited…and very, very relieved,” remarked Sinninghie, hours before taking a much-needed vacation.
“I am a mother of three, and a ‘Block Parent,” began new chair Whalen. “When I heard the program was in jeopardy, I ‘hmm’d’ and I ‘haah’d’–but ultimately, as a parent I’d be letting my kids and myself down if this program were to fold.”
Other new “Block Parent” board members include Jennifer Harvie as vice-chair and PR rep, and Maria Sanders as treasurer. Several other new members are also likely to come on board soon.
Whalen noted that she did have a drive to spread the program. “I feel I need to know that there are more ‘Block Parents’ out there,” she stated.
About 240 homes in the community in town have permission to display “Block Parent” signs in their windows.
Self-admittedly “burned out,” Sinninghie was glad to see the endeavour, meant to safeguard children against threats such as strangers and other potential dangers, continue as it was meant to.
With new blood, the program will continue on with a renewed vigour. “The first part of May we’ll be getting together with our area reps and calling current program members to find out their concerns and if anyone has visited their homes needing their “Block parent” services,” mentioned Sinninghie, who will be staying with the program to advise the newest members.
“We’ll also be seeing if signs have been kept up in the windows–getting things back on track and trying to attract new members,” she added.
Sinninghie would like to thank everyone who contacted her for helping out and volunteering with a worthy cause.
Anyone wishing to become a “Block Parent” can pick up an application at the OPP detachment here, or contact one of its members.
