The second-annual Treaty #3 bicycle rodeo and fun day was a success on Saturday, with about 80 children coming out to test their knowledge of road safety.
“It went really, really well. I was really impressed. It was an awesome day,” said co-organizer Alannah Fyfe.
The event was held at the Couchiching multi-use facility, where kids had their bikes inspected by Skates and Blades owner Chris McKinnon. He checked that the brakes were in good working order and that tire pressure was good.
The kids then were taken through a sort of obstacle course, where they were asked to weave their bikes in and out of pylons, follow a figure eight, and show how to properly cross an intersection.
Treaty #3 Cst. Armand Jourdain and Cst. Christine Jourdain, among others, guided the children through the course.
The rodeo was followed by a barbecue. There also were draws for items donated by local businesses, as well as eight bikes of various sizes and designs.
Fyfe said she wanted to organize the event to give back to the community.
“It’s something that I love to do,” she enthused. “I don’t think there’s enough for kids to do.”
The event was open to all children aged three-15. Some of the First Nations in the area sent busloads of kids with their bikes to participate.
Another bike rodeo—organized with the local OPP—is scheduled for Saturday, June 17 at Canadian Tire here.
