‘Big Bike’ getting ready to roll

The “Big Bike Ride” is coming to Fort Frances on June 14 to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and pledge sheets are now available.
“The sooner we get the pledges going, the better,” said co-ordinator Lori McColl, who operates out of the Foundation’s regional office in Thunder Bay.
“First, there’s a team captain, who can contact us and then is responsible for putting together a team,” she explained. “Then, each rider gets a pledge sheet to fill up before the date of the ride.”
The bike holds 30 people, including the captain. Teams will take a turn riding the bike from a Scott Street location, around several blocks, and then back again.
And if riders get enough pledges, they also can walk away with prizes.
“For each total of $50, $100, and so on, there are various prizes,” noted McColl, noting bucket hats, T-shirts, “Big Bike” watches, travel mugs, hooded sweatshirts, jackets, and cooler seats were among the items to be won.
The event has been running provincially for seven years, and five years in Northwestern Ontario.
Over the last five years, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario has committed more than $17 million to stroke research. It also has taken a leadership role in bringing together key experts and developing tangible solutions in the area of heart disease.
It continues to build public awareness of the signs and symptoms of heart attacks and strokes, and actively promotes prevention.
