BIA gearing up for ‘Mall Days’

Downtown Fort Frances will be the place to be next Thursday (June 29) when the Business Improvement Association holds its annual “Mall Days” celebration.
“This is the start of Fun in the Sun,” BIA co-ordinator Patti Anderson enthused yesterday. “‘Mall Days’ has always been the start of the fun, so we want to get people down here and have some fun.”
Once again, the 200 and 300 blocks of Scott Street will be blocked off all day to allow for a myriad of sidewalk sales, kids’ activities, and much more to take place.
There also will be displays by certain businesses not normally seen on Scott Street, such as Peterbilt, Pinewood Sports & Marine, and possibly Badiuk Equipment.
Celeste’s also will be doing its annual “Cuts for Cancer” while NCDS may be having a volleyball tourney. Howarth’s Home Centre will be holding a barbecue.
A stage also will be set up in front of Sight & Sound, where there will be live entertainment from noon onward. Some of the performers include the Fort Frances Highlanders and “Pairs ’n Squares” dancers.
“Mall Days” also will see the 2006 Mini-Queen pageant, presented by Wood’s Sewing Centre. It will take place on the stage starting at 11 a.m.
Entry forms are available now at the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce office (474 Scott St.) or from Gloria Wood (274-3146).
They must be turned in to Wood or at the Chamber office by 4 p.m. next Tuesday (June 27).
Meanwhile, this year’s Fun in the Sun queen contestants—Liz Black, Chelsea Bragg, Shanna Ewald, Alyssa Holliday, and Sonnie Martin—will be participating in activities all day long, including a kids’ corner with face-painting, games, prizes, and a cookie walk and bake sale.
Anderson said if any local clubs and service groups want to have displays set up downtown on June 29, or perhaps tie in their own fundraiser activities to “Mall Days,” they should call her at 274-7502.
While “Mall Days” officially lasts only one day (Thursday), Anderson said downtown businesses are encouraged to keep promotions and sidewalk sales going for several days as part of the Fun in the Sun celebration.
Friday, June 30 is the rain date for “Mall Days,” but Anderson said she hopes that won’t be the case because other activities, such as the Fort Frances Public Library’s “Teddy Bear Picnic,” already are scheduled for that day.
