Rainy River District OPP would like the public to be aware of a computer scam that is appearing locally.
The fraudster “cold calls” the customer and tells them about possible computer software problems and coding issues on their computer.
He then invites them to download a piece of remote-assistance software.
Once the fraudster has been given remote access to the customer’s computer, indecipherable codes appear on their screen and the fraudulent tech support people will come on the line and reassure the computer owner that they will make the virus vanish with a payment of $179.99.
The “company” behind these particular calls is called Tech Buddha.
Although there are other schemes that appear very similar, the Tech Buddha scam reassures the victim by leading them to a legitimate-looking website.
The public should keep in mind that website domains can be registered for less than $10, and the website is not substantial and simply there just for appearance.
Allowing a third party to download software or remotely access a computer carries inherent risks.
Keyloggers or other malicious software could be installed to capture sensitive data, such as online banking user names and passwords, bank account information, identity information, etc.
