The recent benefit dinner held by the Fort Frances Lions Club for local six-year-olds Brett Jewell and Darren Vlassoff raised almost $9,000, organizers revealed late last week.
Some of the proceeds, netted from ticket sales and the silent and live auctions, went towards expenses incurred by the Jewell family during their son’s hyperbaric oxygen therapy for his cerebral palsy in Vancouver last month.
The Lions Club also made a donation to the Easter Seals Society, which is helping Vlassoff’s family with expenses incurred as a result of surgery to remove his non-malignant brain cyst.
The Easter Seals will continue to assist in Vlassoff’s medical needs until he is 19 years of age.
“Community spirit is alive and well!” Lions president Jacques Fafard enthused last week. “The benefit surpassed what we had hoped for.”
Fafard said any surplus funds left over from the benefit, which was held at La Place Rendez-Vous, will be set aside to further assist the families if the need arises.
“If there is no need, then the money will go towards helping other children,” he noted.
Vlassoff’s surgery took place at the Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto last Thursday but no word on his condition was available by press time today.
