Voices will ring out from the stage of the Backus Auditorium in International Falls once more as a benefit concert aims to raise money to keep the facility open.
The Premier Concert at Backus Auditorium will feature the a capella group, “Marcoux Corner,” on Monday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets cost $10 at the door, but additional contributions are welcomed.
The four-man group has opened for the Beach Boys and features songs from every genre of popular music, especially doo-wop songs of the 50’s and 60’s.
“They performed here last spring and were very well-received so this is a kind of return engagement,” said Margarett Patnode of the “Citizens for Backus-AB” community group now in charge of maintaining the building complex.
“They’re Minnesota boys, all of them. . . . They sound a lot like the Beach Boys,” she enthused.
The concert is being sponsored by the Allied Concert Series, which provides entertainment for the Border Concert Association, and by the “Citizens for Backus-AB” group.
Proceeds from the concert will help the community group maintain and operate the historic building complex now that it is taking control of it from the International Falls School Board.
Patnode said one of the reasons “Marcoux Corner” wanted to return to the area is that they regretted the thought the acoustically-exquisite theatre would be closed.
“It will be a fun night,” Patnode promised. “They’re fantastic and their rapport with the audience is fantastic.”
