Six children from Belarus likely are anxious to get started on six weeks of fun after getting off a very long flight from their homeland and reuniting with their district host families yesterday in Winnipeg.
And just like last year, the group will get a warm welcome from the Rainy Lake Multicultural Association when members host a picnic this Saturday at Pither’s Point Park.
“We’re very pleased to see them coming, and we’re happy to do it again,” said Sig Mosley.
All the proceeds from the association’s Fun in the Sun food booths have gone towards putting on the picnic.
All of last year’s donors, this year’s donors, host families, and anyone interested in participating as a host family next year are invited to come out and visit with the youngsters.
“It would be nice for people to meet them and find out what their visit is all about,” noted Mosley.
Due to the difficulty in preparing for an unknown number of people, everyone who attends is asked to bring along something to eat.
Unlike last year, which included group activities like horseback riding at Trail’s End Riding Stables, the picnic will be the only time when all six children will be together.
Instead, each host family will be doing many activities with their young guests during their stay here.
Iryna Slavashevich and Alena Mauchun will be staying with Tony and Yvonne Gill of Morson once again while Dimitry Fedoruk is being housed by Cathy Zin and Terry Wilcott of here.
Albert and Linda Beller are welcoming Dzmitry Stryha and Artsion Kandratsic into their Rainy River home, and fellow Rainy River residents David and Heidi Ivall are reunited with Veronica Tademkova.
If the children take to the outdoor splendour of Northwestern Ontario like they did last year, the kids most will likely be swimming, fishing, and playing with their seasonal “brothers and sisters.”
The children are slated to return to Belarus on Aug. 15.
Last July, 10 Belorussian children came here for a respite from the harsh environment of their homeland still reeling in the wake of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.
Due to various reasons, not all the kids were able to return this summer.
