Beautification committee plans to get active this summer

With the clock ticking before several big events take place here in the next two years, it’s hoped several beautification projects will get underway this summer.
“One of the things I’ve said from the start is that we are going to try to get as much done as possible this summer in time for next year’s [World Health Organization] conference,” said Crystal Godbout, chair of the Beautification Planning Committee being spearheaded by the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce.
“And then, we’ll do as much as possible the next summer in preparation for the [town’s] centennial,” she added. “They’re goals in the back of our minds.”
While Godbout said she’s spent much of her time between committee meetings looking into sources for funding, more and more ideas for possible ways to beautify the town keep coming in.
“One thing people said they would like to see is the beautification of the entrance ways to town,” said Godbout, noting this is a project the Chamber very likely will pursue this summer.
“People would also like to see a greenscape in central Fort Frances–some place with trees and grass where can they sit down on a nice day,” she added.
Other projects may include one or more murals by the Business Improvement Area (BIA) and the continuation of work on the waterfront project.
And service clubs like the Rotary Club, which is represented on the beautification committee, will develop the McIrvine Park while the Lions maintain–and make small additions like new “dedication bricks”–to its park on Second Street East.
Godbout added she remains hopeful some of the ideas will see the light of day despite the tight schedule. “We like to see certain organizations work on certain things. We can get more done if groups come together,” she stressed.
“And I’ve been busy looking into what kinds of funds are available, doing research on the Internet,” she added.
The committee was formed last month and most recently held a meeting last Thursday. Godbout is in the process of scheduling the next one.
