The OPP would like to remind the public to be careful when venturing out on area lakes and rivers.
With the mild temperatures the region has been experiencing lately, ice thickness may not be the same as in years past when we usually have had a stretch of minus-20 to minus-30 degree temperatures by now.
Some area lakes have up to 12 inches of ice thickness. But near some of the islands, and rivers where there are varying currents, the ice is questionable.
Avoid fast-moving rivers and hydro dams.
Always be prepared when you venture out, always advise someone of your destination and when you expect to return, and carry a cellphone with you.
If possible, wear a floater suit and have ice picks available.
The recommended minimum ice thickness is 10 cm (four inches) for the weight of a person and 12 cm (five inches) for a snowmobile.
The recommended minimum for a vehicle is 30-38 cm (12-15 inches).
Always know the ice conditions before you venture out.
