“I’m so excited–this is amazing.”
Those were the words of Angela Barron shortly after being crowned Miss Fun in the Sun ’99 in front of a Canada Day crowd at La Place Rendez-Vous.
“I had no idea I could win,” she added. “We had so much to do we didn’t really think about winning.”
Katie Pierroz, who had taken top honours in the talent portion four nights earlier, was crowned First Princess. Ashlee Wilson was named Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants, who also included Jennifer Cooper and Laura Wickstrom.
“I’d like to thank all the girls for voting me Miss Congeniality but, really, each of them deserved it,” enthused Wilson, who was visibly thrilled when her name was announced.
Barron, who was crowned by 1998 Miss Fun in the Sun Raelle Ducharme, also received a $1,000 scholarship and a ring. Pierroz got a $500 scholarship and several small gifts.
Wilson took home a large gift basket full of all sorts of items, and Cooper and Wickstrom each got a bracelet, among other gifts.
Both Barron and Wilson said the joy of meeting new people was what they liked best about running in the pageant.
“It was nice to get to make new friends. I knew only a couple of the girls before,” noted Wilson.
“Plus, I liked being out in the community, dealing with kids during activities like the obstacle course at the soccer fields,” she added.
“I’ve had so much fun being involved in this, being with the other girls,” echoed Barron.
“I’m going to have a great year ahead of me,” she smiled.
Also on hand for the crowning were 1999 Mini-Queen Katelyn Shortreed, 1998 Mr. Fun in the Sun Dino Morelli Jr., First Knight Steve Niskala, and First Princess Adia Huss-Solomon.
This year’s judges were Kirsten Bodnarchuk, Leanne Cameron, and Joyce Scott.
Earlier Thursday, the picnic basket auction also went well, with Copper landing a whopping $100 for her big basket of goodies. The obviously hungry buyer was Lyle Armstrong.
In related news, the winning number of the queen button draw is #1152. The winner should go to Woods Sewing Machines on Scott Street to collect the $100 prize.
Meanwhile, Beta Sigma Phi Phi Iota chapter’s “Beach Baby” winners also were announced on Canada Day, with Sanity Morrisseau placing first, Kassidy Strachan taking second, and Kale Nordine coming third.
