Local musician and business owner Dave Ashworth is looking for bands of yesterday to help celebrate this year’s Canada Day with “a blast from the past.”
Ashworth said he’d like to get two or three bands from decades past back together and play for the public at Pither’s Point Park on Canada Day.
This would be a free, all ages event running from the late afternoon or early evening until dusk, when the fireworks display goes off (around 10 p.m.).
After the pyrotechnics, the bands then could carry on at the Legion until closing time.
Ashworth added the bands could play for a set at each venue, with possibly some sort of “all-star jam” to close the night out at the Legion.
“I am hoping to get some good bands,” he remarked, adding there’s been some interest expressed to him so far.

Ashworth said the idea was to provide a musical “trip down memory lane” and harken back to the “heyday” of Fun in the Sun in the 1970s and ’80s, when the celebration was much greater in scope, with baseball tourneys, live music, and much more, and lasted 10 days, culminating in Canada Day festivities.
He added he would love to see the overall FITS celebration make a comeback here, adding the town can stage more than one major community event each summer.
