Backus ‘blast’ planned

If you’re looking for something different to do this New Year’s Eve, look no further!
The Community New Year’s Eve BLAST at the Backus Community Centre over in International Falls will have it all: casino party games, including poker, blackjack, roulette, and others, live and silent auctions, hors d’oeuvres and beverages, music, contests, and prizes!
Ten local groups have banded together to put on the party you’ve always wanted to attend. The Community New Year’s Eve BLAST will be the place to be this year.
Guests will celebrate in style while supporting our community’s efforts to enhance the quality of life for all our citizens.
After your time-honoured, traditional dinner at your favourite local restaurant, you’ll want to drop by the Backus Community Centre for a night of music, charitable gaming, contests, prizes, and refreshments.
Relax, visit with friends, play a little poker, blackjack, and other games, and check out the great auction items you’ll want to bid on.
In addition to the events on the Backus stage, there will be an alcohol-free celebration in the “Dungeon,” where music, dancing, and socializing for “teens” of all ages will be available.
A laser show from 8:30-9 p.m. will be included for anyone with a ticket to the BLAST.
If you are the parent of a school-aged child, we’ve got great news for you, too. A children’s New Year’s party will take place at St. Thomas School.
Those attending the BLAST will be able to purchase “rider” tickets for their children to attend a celebration prepared especially for them.
There will be activities, games, treats, and tender loving care. Children will enjoy an evening of fun in a safe environment—right across the street”—for parents who might like to drop in during the evening.
Students participating in a leadership program for 4-H will be assisting with this event.
To help us all greet 2007, the city and county will be hosting a spectacular fireworks display at midnight, signalling the end of Koochiching County’s centennial year.
The party ignites at 8:30 p.m. and will last through 12:30 a.m. Local celebrities and volunteers will be on hand as card dealers and servers.
Items will be auctioned throughout the evening, including a weekend getaway package to Fortune Bay casino, an autographed guitar from the band Styx, fine art pieces donated by local artists, and more!
You are guaranteed a grand evening, and your attendance will help local, non-profit organizations that support our quality of life, including the Borderland Humane Society, Falls Hunger Coalition, Purple Pride Fund, Friends of the Library, Backus Community Centre, Falls Education Foundation, Icebox Radio Theatre, Rainy Lake Community Orchestra, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and St. Thomas School.
Tickets to the BLAST include music and entertainment gaming, opportunities to win prizes and bid on auction items, a delectable array of appetizers, and a complimentary glass of champagne.
A cash bar will be on site.
The $25 event tickets and $5 “rider” tickets for the children’s celebration at St. Thomas School may be purchased at Betty’s in Fort Frances, or in International Falls at City Drug, Coffee Landing Metro, No Place Like Home, Thrifty White Drug, and the Backus Community Centre Office.
Tickets to the party in the Dungeon may be purchased at the door for $5.
The organizing committee for this coalition of non-profit groups wishes to thank the local businesses and individuals who have contributed to the support of his event so far.
If you would like to volunteer, donate, or become a sponsor, we would welcome your participation. Call the Falls Hunger Coalition at 1-218-283-8020 or the Backus Community Centre at 1-218-285-7225, or talk to any of the organizations listed above.
There is much fun to be had during the planning stages of the event, and your time will be donated to the cause of your choice.
