Awards deadline extended

The nomination period for Volunteer Service Awards will be extended one week from Jan. 15 until Jan. 22, Ontario Citizenship and Immigration minister Mike Colle announced last week.
“We want to make sure every volunteer organization in the province takes the opportunity to pay tribute to their volunteers through the Volunteer Service Awards,” said Colle, speaking at the Toronto Chinese Community Services Association in Markham.
“Ontario’s volunteers make a difference in every community in this province and the Volunteer Service Awards are just one way we can say thank you for their generosity,” he added.
The Ontario Volunteer Service Awards recognize five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, and 50 years of service. New in 2007 is an award for 60-plus years of continuous service to a single organization.
Youth awards recognize two or more years of service.
All award winners receive a stylized trillium pin and a personalized certificate.
“Every year, more than five million Ontarians volunteer their time through 75,000 charitable and non-profit organizations,” said Colle. “Together their contributions translate into more than 800 million volunteer hours annually.”
Last year, Volunteer Service Awards celebrated its 20th anniversary. More than 9,000 people received the award at ceremonies in communities across Ontario.
