Atikokan High School will be presented with the Rainy River District School Board’s monthly “Recognition of Excellence” at its regular meeting there tonight.
The school will be honoured for its “Learning For All” project and Information Technology coaching.
“The ‘Learning For All’ K-12 project has built capacity for the use of technology in the classroom in an effective and positive way: teacher to teacher,” the report to board trustees noted.
“The four staff members who have been part of this project have returned from each session enthusiastically ready to implement what they have learned in their classrooms, and to share their knowledge and experiences with fellow staff members,” it added.
The report also indicated that the Information Technology (IT) coaches in the school have been an invaluable addition to the programming there.
“These coaches have provided daily classroom support for all staff through formal training on the various programs and tools that are available,” it said.
The coaches also have provided:
•professional development sessions for the school’s teachers and educational assistants;
•individual training for staff interested in programs unique to their curriculum or work responsibility;
•individual training for special needs students in the use of assistive technologies;
•co-planning and co-teaching of lessons; and
•positive, enthusiastic mentoring while the learning is happening.
The report added Atikokan High School has a long tradition of using experiential learning to bring the curriculum to life for its students.
“We have been very fortunate this year to have coaching support for our staff in order to incorporate and expand the effective use of information technology,” it noted.
Also at tonight’s meeting, which sees the public session getting underway at 7 p.m., the board will:
•hear a presentation about the Early Primary Collaborative Inquiry; and
•receive the personnel report dated May, 2013.
