On the heels of a trip to the Rainy Lake mermaid last summer, a group of local artists is turning their collective creative eye to the Devil’s Cascade on Rainy Lake next Saturday (July 12).
“The last time was successful, so we wanted to do something again this year,” said organizer Mark Kowalchuk, who also was involved with the mermaid trip.
The point of the trip is to allow artists—no matter what medium they choose to work in—a chance to get up close and personal with the Devil’s Cascade, about 50 km up the north arm of Rainy Lake, in preparation for a second “Rainy Lake Impressions” art show in August.
“We’ve already got a half-dozen artists going,” noted Kowalchuk.
For others who may be interested, it’s not too late to register. Call Pam Hawley at the Fort Frances Museum (274-7891) to sign up.
Artists will be leaving the government dock at Pither’s Point at 10 a.m. next Saturday and spend much of the day at the Devil’s Cascade—taking photos and making sketches of it.
Last year, the Rainy Lake mermaid was celebrated on her 70th birthday during the inaugural “Rainy Lake Impressions” art show—an event which produced the mermaid sculpture by Mark Faragher and Hawley that will be unveiled July 1 along the La Verendrye Parkway.
This year’s theme also ties in well with the centennial celebration as the Devil’s Cascade is an aspect of the area’s rich history—having long been an attraction for local residents and visitors alike.
By the 1920s, daily excursions took outdoor enthusiasts to the beautiful wilderness areas of Rainy Lake.
