“Summer Art Week” returns to the Backus Community Centre in International Falls this month and will feature a Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre performance of “Pinocchio.”
“Summer Art Week,” which runs June 18-23, allows children aged five-16 to explore their creative sides through a variety of classes.
This years’ offerings include Music & Movement, S.T.E.A.M., Cupcake Art, Garden Art, Messy Art, Jewellery Making, and 3-D Woven Sculpture.
The week will allow for children to take part in a morning and an afternoon class.
The schedule also includes the option to participate in Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre production of “Pinocchio,” which is open to children aged seven-18.
Educators tell us that art encourages fine motor skills, neural development, and problem-solving abilities, and that it can be used effectively to teach and understand other key subjects such as reading, writing, math, and science.
Therapists tell us that art is valuable because it allows children to process their world, to deal with sometimes scary emotions in a safe way, and because it gives them critical sensory input.
Artists tell us that art is important for its own sake–as a source of beauty and expression, as well as simply for the process of creating.
Kids tell us that art is fun and an activity they enjoy.
“Summer Art Week” will conclude on Saturday, June 23 at 6 p.m. with an art exhibit in the dining room featuring works created during the week, followed by the performance of “Pinocchio” at 7 p.m. in the Backus Auditorium.
Parents and grandparents can register students by stopping by the Backus office at 900 Fifth St. or print the registration form from the website at www.backusab.org
Art classes cost $25 (U.S.) per student per class and theatre is $55 if registered by June 14.
Class sizes are limited and classes are filling up.
