The question as to who will represent Northwestern Ontario at the Ontario Winter Games in London next month is still up in the air.
Last month, the Canadians played a best-of-three series against the Thunder Bay Hurricanes for that privilege and were swept two straight.
But when it was discovered the Hurricanes had used an ineligible player, the second game was forfeited to Fort Frances, thus setting up a third-and-deciding game.
In the interim, however, Thunder Bay appealed that ruling and subsequently won. The original decision was overturned and the game—and series—were awarded to the Hurricanes.
But hold on. Lynn Kellar, president of the Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association, said that decision now is being appealed to Hockey Canada.
“We appealed the second game because they [Fort William] had 20 guys on their roster. The league rules only allow 19,” he explained.
Kellar said the first decision was overturned on a technicality dealing with the manner in which the first appeal by Fort Frances was registered.
He noted Hockey Northwestern Ontario required that the original appeal by Fort Frances should have been made in person within 48 hours of the game, but Kellar stressed no one here was informed of that at the time.
He said Hockey Canada’s decision—which is presumably final—should come down by early next week.
