Another condo deadline looms

The fate of the planned River Walk Condominium will be decided by Monday, when proponents face the final deadline for finding enough buyers to move ahead with the Front Street project.
The Fort Frances Non-Profit Housing Committee, and representatives from Winnipeg developer Penn-co Construction Corp., were to meet Thursday afternoon to discuss the future of the almost $5-million project.
“I remain optimistic. It’s a good project,” Fort Frances CAO Bill Naturkach said.
Town council previously had stated it would not begin construction of the 32-unit complex unless 75 percent of the condos (24) were pre-sold.
But with just 19 buyers signed on, the committee made a deal with Penn-co to take over responsibility for four of those units—leaving just one buyer needed to move into the construction phase.
But Penn-co has said its bid to build the complex only will remain in effect until Monday. If this deadline passes, the project could go back to square one.
Naturkach said he hadn’t heard if another buyer had been located by Thursday morning, but if not, he said all options to get shovels into the ground will be explored.
