Annual ‘snowshoe challenge’ goes tonight

After accepting an invitation to compete in the annual “Icebox Days” Snowshoe Challenge tonight at Smokey Bear Park over in the Falls, town employees are champing at the bit to take the crown again this year.
“We’re back to defend our championship again. In 18 years, our name’s been off the trophy only twice,” noted Mayor Glenn “Winnerspoon,” who volunteered to coach this year’s team.
Mayor “Winnerspoon” added the team has been plotting some “dirty tricks” for the challenge, and is supremely confident in their diabolical schemes.
“It’s a relay and if we’ve got opportunity, our number-three guy is going to stand on the backs of the snowshoes of their number-three guy,” he remarked.
This year’s team also will sport Coun. Struchan “the Strider” Gilson, George “The Forge” Bell, Pat “The Passer” Hickerson, Darryl “Bin Allan win,” Bill “Way to Go, CAO” Naturkach, and Glen “Tough Win” Treftlin.
Mayor “Winnerspoon” noted the team is much the same as last year’s, with the addition of Gilson being just another nail in the coffin for the Falls’ team.
Allan agreed the team’s performance should be much like last year, where “We came, we saw, we kicked their butts,” he recalled.
“Basically, we have a snowshoe dream team so we don’t have to prepare,” he boasted. But he added he felt his “handle” might be his only detriment as a competitor.
“It may cause a little concern at the U.S. Customs, but I’m sure the rest of the team will get through,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Falls Mayor Harry Swendsen said his team is “looking forward to the race.”
“We’re going to try and catch them flat-footed this year,” he vowed, adding his team also has an ace up their sleeve.
“We have a new city administrator [Dave Richards] this year, and we hired him just because of his long legs for this race,” Swendsen said. “We wish he were a little younger, but we’re expecting him to do well anyway.”
And the Falls team also is doing a little praying the elements will work in their favour. “If it’s not snowing, we think it will throw those Canadians off a bit,” he chuckled.
The race starts at 8 p.m. at Smokey Bear Park.
