Annual Conservation Dinner a success

The seventh-annual Conservation Dinner, co-hosted by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and the Fort Frances Sportsmen’s Club, was held Friday night at La Place Rendez-Vous.
Although the crowd on hand wasn’t as big as in past years, those who did turn out had a good time–all while lending their support to conservation efforts here and across the province.
In the past year, local efforts have included the reintroduction of elk into the Cameron Lake area, assisting the education programs in the local schools, and working with the local public school board to bring in the O.F.A.H. “Travelling Teacher” program.
“I just want to thank you all for having this event and hosting it in Fort Frances,” said O.F.A.H. rep Herb Raglin.
As usual, the evening featured a live and silent auction, special raffles, and numerous draw prizes. But in one twist, the meal was served up by members of the inaugural Muskie girls’ hockey team.
Mary Socholotuk, who attended the dinner with her husband, Alex, joked about the money she and her husband would be spending on the items up for auction, many donated by local artists and craftspeople.
“After my husband bids on a few things, we may be eating beans and franks for a while,” she laughed.
“The supper was just wonderful,” Socholotuk added. “This whole evening has been just lovely.”
