With January being “Alzheimer Awareness Month,” the Alzheimer Society of Kenora-Rainy River Districts has lined up several activities here you’ll want to mark on your calendar.
First, a free virtual dementia tour will be held next Wednesday (Jan. 11) at Super 8 Motel.
The tour is a hands-on, experiential tool kit meant to convey to people the physical and mental challenges of those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia.
It is meant to help outsides understand what those they care for are going through. In turn, this can help improve communication with, and care of, those affected by dementia.
The tours will run from 1-7 p.m., and will take about 20 minutes per participant.

Then it will be Alzheimer Movie Day on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 1:30 p.m. at the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre.
Stop by for cake and a movie.
As well, the ever-popular Alzheimer book sale will take place Jan. 19-21 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day at Revco Carpet.
Book-lovers can drop by the store, fill a bag with books, and then make a donation to the Alzheimer Society.
The public is encouraged to donate gently-used book by dropping them off at Revco (located at 950 Fifth St. W.) by Saturday, Jan. 14.
The book sale will coincide with the penny weigh-in, so everyone is asked to bring in that copper and maybe win a prize.
Finally, the Linda Johnston Memorial Dinner will be held Saturday, Jan. 28 starting at 5 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion in Rainy River.
The very popular roast beef dinner once again will feature a “Chairs for Charity” raffle and penny table.
Tickets cost $13 each, which can be purchased by contacting the Rainy River Record at 852-3366.
In related news, the Alzheimer Society will not be holding a “Chefs’ Charitable Dinner and Auction” here this January.
Instead, it will be trying something new with a fundraising dinner, entitled “Spring Reflections,” planned for Saturday, March 24 at La Place Rendez-Vous.
In addition to dinner, the evening will feature entertainment and a silent auction.
Tickets, which are available now by calling 1-800-682-0245, cost $65 each (a tax receipt for $35 will be issued).
Tables of eight can be reserved for $520.
