Town council asked for input on the 2014 budget—and they will get it.
At a public meeting this evening, council will hear from five confirmed presenters, as well as receive two written submissions, regarding the upcoming budget.
Doug Anderson, chair of the Downtown BIA, will speak re: the demolition of the derelict Rainy Lake Hotel while Lt. Dennis Maybury of the local Salvation Army will make a request in conjunction with that organization’s 100th anniversary celebrations.
Sarah Marusyk and Cathy Tysz, members of the Boundary Waters Dragon Boat Club, will seek support for the 2014 Dragon Boat Festival here while president Mark Caron and past president Cathy Emes of the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce will request tourism and operating support.
As well, local resident Merv Ahrens will be speak to council about the importance of maintaining and replacing town trees.
Council also will receive written submissions from the Fort Frances “Meals on Wheels” program regarding an annual operating grant and Al Christiansen regarding the consideration of tennis courts in the 2014 budget process.
Additionally, residents can show up at tonight’s meeting and make written and oral submissions, at the discretion of mayor and council.
The public budget meeting is scheduled to start at 6:35 p.m.
It will be preceded by the committee of the whole, which will meet at 5:30 p.m. but is anticipated to be in-camera until 6:10.
Other business on the agenda includes:
•a report re: taxi by-law amendment requests from 539989 Ontario Ltd. (North Air Services);
•a report re: the name of the new road within the Huffman subdivision;
•a recommendation re: the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame and Museum’s financial request;
•Minutes of Settlement for 115 Sixth St. E. (2013), 1029 Frenette Ave. (2013), 720 Fifth St. W. (2013), 527 Third St. W. (2013), 412 Scott St. (2013), and 525 King’s Highway (2011 and 2012);
•an update on capital projects; and
•a request from Restorative Justice Division, Correctional Service Canada, to proclaim Nov. 17-24 as “Restorative Justice Week 2013” in the Town of Fort Frances.
