Why not be thankful for your democratic freedom this Thanksgiving weekend and vote in the advance poll for the federal election?
Advance polls are open today through Monday (Oct. 9-12) from noon-8 p.m. at the Copper River Inn in Fort Frances and the rec centre in Rainy River.
Remember to bring along your voter information card the you should have received in the mail.
More importantly, you must bring I.D., as well
There are three options:
•one original piece of photo identification issued by the government or government agency, such as a driver’s licence;
•two original pieces of identification, both of which must contain your name and one with your home address; or
•swearing an oath and being vouched for by someone with proper identification who is on the same list of electors and in the same polling division.
If you did not receive a voter information card in the mail, don’t worry.
You still can vote as long as you have the proper I.D., are a Canadian citizen, and are at least 18 years old on election day.
There are 12 advance polls across the Thunder Bay-Rainy River riding over the next four days.
The total voter turnout for the advance poll in this riding in the last election was 4,847 over three days.
A total of 692 of these votes came from three polls held in the Rainy River District end of the riding.
The advance poll turnout from 2011 represents 13 percent of the total voter turnout in that election for the Thunder Bay-Rainy River riding.
A total of 37,288 of 62,932 eligible electors voted overall in the 2011 election—a turnout of 59.25 percent.
There are 62,207 eligible voters in the riding for this election.
A reminder you also can vote by special ballot at the local Elections Canada office anytime before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
The office, located in the Rainy Lake Plaza on King’s Highway, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
The actual election day is Monday, Oct. 19, when polls will be open from 8:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m.
Check your voter information card for the location of the poll you should vote at.
There will a total 37 polls in the west end of the riding (from Mine Centre to Rainy River), and each First Nation also will have a poll.
