A workshop held last Thursday at the Sunset Country Métis Hall here was a proactive measure for those who have family members struggling with addictions.
The day-long workshop was presented by Couchiching Treatment and Support Services, with organizers from the Sunset Country Métis and the United Native Friendship Centre.
“It shows the family that we are there to support them whether they are the ones dealing with the addiction or have a family member dealing with it,” noted Anne-Marie Armstrong of the Sunset Country Métis, who sat on the organizing committee.
She noted there was a good turnout for the workshop and many people had their questions answered.
“There is a lot of support out there with front-line workers and counsellors, but a lot of the time it’s the person with the addictions seeing those people and not necessarily the family that is struggling to keep things together,” Armstrong added.
Presentations were offered by Ruben Wasacase of the Migisi Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centre, Hugh Dennis, co-ordinator of the Rainy River District Substance Abuse Prevention Team, and local pharmacist Renate Winkler, who spoke about methadone.
Others instrumental in organizing the workshop included Albert Calder, Tracy Lockman, Joanne Indian, and Heidi Parr.
