What do Robin Williams, Thomas Edison, and Albert Einstein have in common? They all had attention deficit disorder–a problem affecting a child’s “good behaviour” and, equally importantly, their ability to learn.
That’s why the local ADD support group, headed by Heather Whitburn and Cynthia Donald, is thrilled an expert on the subject coming to town March 4.
Dr. W. Degroot, an expert on child behaviour who teaches at the University of Manitoba, will be giving the talk which Whitburn hopes will shed a lot of light on the sometimes-misunderstood disorder.
“There are people who just don’t know what to do if their child is diagnosed with ADD,” she noted. “It can be hard.”
“We both met him before,” said Donald, a grade one teacher at Robert Moore School here. “I’m really hoping teachers will attend, especially if ADD has been manifesting in the classroom.
“If teachers know more about it, it can make their lives a whole lot easier,” she added.
Dr. Degroot did a presentation in Sioux Narrows last year, which Whitburn said was “really well-received.”
“It raised awareness among parents, caregivers, everyone,” she added.
Topics to be covered during the two-hour talk will include ADD and its symptoms, child-rearing disciplinary principles, the effects of television on children, and role models.
Although a location for the presentation has yet to be confirmed, Whitburn guessed Dr. Degroot most likely will speak at Robert Moore School or the Fort High auditorium.
