Nearly 100 years after the Stanley Cup final was cancelled, the same fate befell those aiming for what would have been a first-ever youth lacrosse championship.
The inaugural UNFC Champions Cup in the age seven-nine and 10-14 divisions won’t be awarded after all after circumstances wiped out the two decisive Game 3s of the best-of-three finals that had been set for Monday.
With the ’52 Canadians Arena taken over by preparations for Fort High’s annual “chem-free” grad party tomorrow night, the White Lightning and Banana Splits squads in both age divisions were left without a venue to play in.
Program organizer Terry (“Goose”) McMahon professed his disappointment over what transpired.
But he promised to bring the program back for a third year next spring and added if there’s enough interest come that time, some youth lacrosse summer events also will be held.

Fort Frances native Ryan Faragher may find a home in “Sin City.”
On Sunday, the 26-year-old goalie was placed on the unprotected list of the Anaheim Ducks for today’s NHL expansion draft.
That means he could be selected by the NHL’s newest franchise, the Vegas Golden Knights, who will begin play this fall.
The results of the draft will be announced tonight during the NHL awards ceremony, which also is taking place in Las Vegas.
The Knights will select one player off the unprotected list of each NHL team to build the roster for its inaugural season.
Faragher posted a 17-15-2 record for the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies this past season, with a 3.09 GAA and .899 save percentage.
