Kids set to stage ‘Wizard of Oz’

Press Release

The Backus Community Center in International Falls has been hosting the annual Summer Arts @ Backus this week (June 6-11).
Kids from kindergarten to high school turn out each year to explore the arts at Backus.
Class topics include painting, botanicals, gardening, cake decorating, lasers, and recycling art.
The classes—designed to be tons of fun while exposing kids to the arts—are held from 10 a.m.-noon and again from 12:30-2:30 p.m.
An art exhibit will be open to the public this Saturday (June 11) at 6 p.m. in the Backus dining room (light refreshments will be served).
Also this week is the return of Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre.
Join 50 local children in a wonderful journey through the magical land of Oz as they take the stage this weekend, along with two professional actors, in Prairie Fire’s original musical production of “The Wizard of Oz.”
The performance is scheduled for this Saturday (June 11) at 7 p.m. in the Backus Auditorium.
Featuring original music and script by Daniel Nordquist, “The Wizard of Oz” continues Prairie Fire’s tradition of presenting classic tales as you’ve never seen them before.
“The Wizard of Oz” features set and costume design by Deborah Pick.
Based on L. Frank Baum’s classic American fairy tale, Prairie Fire’s version is set in contemporary America at the beginning—and it is from there that the tornado takes Dorothy over the rainbow to Oz.
The local cast features youths ranging from age seven-18.
Prairie Fire professionals play the role of the Wicked Witch of the West and the Scarecrow, in addition to directing the production.
Tickets cost $6 for adults, $3 for students, and $15 families (U.S.), which are available at the door the night of the show.
This Prairie Fire theatre residency is being sponsored by the Backus Community Center.
