Fradulent residency claims cost hunters

Press Release

Two Winnipeg residents have been convicted of offences related to the illegal possession of a resident hunting licence.
Richard Brannan, 39, and Leonard Hoey, 38, each were convicted of two offences related to deer hunting in Ontario under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.
Brannan was fined $2,250 and Hoey $1,250. Both men also received a one-year hunting suspension.
Court heard that on Nov. 1, a conservation officer encountered Brannan and Hoey deer hunting in Wildlife Management Unit 5 near Vermilion Bay. This area is closed to non-residents of Ontario for deer hunting.
Brannan and Hoey, both former Ontario residents, each had used the hunting version of their Outdoors Card to purchase resident deer licences, although they did not meet the criteria to be considered residents.
Brannan, a Manitoba resident, had continued to maintain an Ontario mailing address.
Justice of the Peace Robert McNally heard the case Feb. 5 in Kenora.
