A contingent of Fort Frances bowlers finished in second place overall at the annual Sunset Country aggregate roll-offs, which were held Saturday and Sunday in Kenora.
The hosts took top honours with 44 total points, followed by Fort Frances with 29 and Atikokan at 28.
Dryden rounded out the four-town showdown.
Bob Petawanaqueb of Fort Frances was the top men’s scratch bowler over the weekend—helping lead the local men’s scratch team to a first-place showing in their division.
The team, which also included Ken Dick, Mike Behan, Rick Stamarski, and Bill Plumridge, was in last place—more than 300 pins behind the leaders—after their first four games Saturday afternoon.
But they bowled steady in their first two games Sunday morning before reeling off a 1,272 total in their final try to overtake Atikokan by about 30 pins.
The Fort Frances women’s scratch team also captured top honours in their division, building a big lead on Saturday before hanging on in the final three games Sunday.
The team was led by Brenda Hanzuk and Dixie McDonald, who finished second and third, respectively, in the running for the top ladies’ scratch total.
The rest of the team included Toni Benning, Carla Hanzuk, and Lori Pattison.
The local mixed scratch team, along with the men’s, ladies’ and mixed handicap squads, failed to finish higher than third place in their divisions.
It’s Dryden’s turn to host the event next year.
