Fire hazard remains high

Four new fires were reported on Sunday. Two fires occurred in Nipigon District, one fire occurred in Fort Frances District and one fire occurred in Thunder Bay District. All fires were less than a hectare in size and responded well to initial attack efforts by fire fighters.
No new fires were reported Saturday, and one new blaze was responded to Friday in Nipigon District.
The forest fire hazard remains “moderate” to “high” across the West Fire Region. Recent thunder storm activity has resulted in a high number of lightning strikes into forested areas that are receptive to lightning caused forest fires. As a result, an increase in the number of lightning caused forest fires is expected. The West Fire Region is monitoring the situation closely.
The public can assist the Aviation and Forest Fire Management program by eliminating human caused forest fires. Fire managers recommend the use of portable gas cook stoves rather than lighting campfires. By eliminating preventable forest fires the MNR can focus its resources on fighting lightning caused fires.
