Figure skaters glide to gold medals

The Border Figure Skating Club skated to several top finishes at the Thunder Bay Open competition last weekend, bringing home 12 gold medals in all.
Sarah McComb led the way with three golds, topping the junior silver compulsory, singles, and spins events. She was coming off a solid performance at a competition in Grand Rapids, Mn. late last month, where she had placed second in the artistic, spins, and solo events.
Melanie Herr earned gold in the preliminary compulsory event and the preliminary singles for her age group while Katie Bondett captured first place in the preliminary compulsory and preliminary singles in her division.
Meanwhile, Brandy Hyatt struck gold in the senior bronze singles event and silver in the senior bronze spins. Jenna Cousineau also took gold in preliminary singles to go along with a second-place finish in intermediate interpretive and a third in preliminary compulsory.
Kayla Caul skated to a gold in the junior bronze spins and a fifth in junior bronze singles.
Other individual results from last weekend’s competition were as follows:
•Trevor Barker–fourth in preliminary singles;
•Mackenzie Caul–seventh in preliminary singles;
•Samantha McQuarrie–third in preliminary compulsory, fourth in preliminary singles, and fifth in intermediate interpretive;
•Kate Basaraba–third in junior compulsory, junior bronze singles, and intermediate interpretative;
•Jessica Wilson–ninth in junior bronze singles and 11th in junior bronze spins;
•Erin Woodgate–fourth in junior bronze singles and seventh in junior bronze spins;
•Christy Herr–seventh in junior bronze compulsory, fifth in junior bronze singles, and ninth in junior bronze spins;
•Tracy DeAmicis–ninth in junior bronze compulsory, second in junior bronze singles, and fifth in junior bronze spins;
•Sara Omar-Hartlin–second in junior bronze compulsory and fourth in junior bronze singles;
•Miranda Miller–third in junior bronze compulsory and junior bronze singles;
•Holly McRae–fourth in senior bronze compulsory and senior bronze singles, and ninth in intermediate interpretative;
•Laureen Luchka–12th in senior bronze singles;
•Faith Kakeeway–fourth in stage five of Canskate event;
•Jessica Woodgate–second in stage six of Canskate event; and
•Noreen Hartlin–sixth in junior silver singles and fourth in junior silver spins.
The BFSC also brought home gold in the team categories, skating to a top finish with their junior bronze squad (consisting of Melanie Herr, Wilson, Bondett, and Basaraba) and their senior bronze team (Kayla Caul, Erin Woodgate, Hyatt, and Luchka).
Another junior bronze team, featuring DeAmicis, Christy Herr, Miller, and Omar-Hartlin, placed second while the preliminary team of Alysia McTavish, Jessica Woodgate, Barker, and Mackenzie Caul finished fifth.
In other news, Hartlin, of Emo, placed seventh at the Northern Ontario Section interclub competition in Gravenhurst last month in the junior bronze ladies’ freeskate event.
Hartlin advanced to the sectionals after placing second in the regional competition.
