Talk about capping a successful weekend in style.
Callum McCormick’s hat trick helped the Emo Express Green roll to a 4-1 win over the West End Bruins in the gold-medal game of the Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association’s annual PeeWee ‘A’ tournament Sunday at the Ice For Kids Arena.
The squad compiled a 3-0-1 record to advance to the final.
McCormick got his team going in Sunday’s final as he netted his first of the game with just 41 seconds left the first period.
He then was Johnny-on-the-spot as he fired a slapshot off of the Bruins’ goalie’s glove and into the net to put Emo up 2-0 with 5:01 to go in the second.
Karsyn McQuaker then staked Emo to a commanding three-goal cushion when he darted in alone on the Bruins’ goal and made no mistake early in the third.
The Bruins got one back just under five minutes later when Jonah Latinen had Express Green goalie Karson Loughrey down and out before firing a shot over his outstretched body to trim it to 3-1.
But Emo regrouped and McCormick capped his hat trick with an empty-netter with 56 seconds to go to seal the win.
The Express Green had opened tourney play Friday with a 4-0 shutout of the Dryden Stingers.
McCormick also netted a hat trick in that one while Taytum Councillor notched the other goal.
They followed that up by doubling the Fort Frances Lions 4-2 later in the day.
McCormick scored twice while McQuaker also tallied (the other goal scorer was not identified).
Evan Wright scored both goals for the Lions.
Then on Saturday, the Express Green battled to a 2-2 tie with the Current River Comets.
Ryan Brown and McCormick provided Emo’s offence in that one.
The squad then capped preliminary play with a 3-0 victory over the Fort Frances Boston Pizza Royals.
McCormick scored all three of Emo’s goals.
The Current River Comets earned the bronze medal earlier Sunday with a 7-2 rout of the Dryden Gators.
Up next, the Fort Frances Bantam ‘AA’ Canadians will host their annual home tournament this Friday through Sunday.
