KENORA, Ont.—Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is probing the circumstances surrounding a shooting involving police in downtown Kenora.
Provincial police say an officer responded to a report of a domestic incident last night.
Police say the officer opened fire when confronted by a woman wielding a knife outside an apartment block.
The SIU said the 39-year-old woman’s condition has stabilized at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre.
The woman’s name has not been released, but Bruce Landon identified her to the Winnipeg Free Press as Helen Peru, his ex-wife.
The SIU is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
