“Wheels to Meals” held its annual wind-up carpet bowling tournament last Thursday afternoon at the Emo Legion.
Six teams participated, including two from Stratton (the Golden Gals and 4-Widows) and four from Emo (the What Nots, Country Gals, We Try, and Just for Fun).
After everything was said and done, the What Nots—featuring Marg Leveridge, Siri Gallinger, Eve Brown, and Marcine James—won top honours with 23 points.
The Golden Gals (Julie Smits, Annie Armstrong, Franesce Anderson, and Marveline Brown) finished placed second with 19 points.
In a playoff for third place, We Try (Inge Szeders, Merv Alberts, and Maurice MacMillan) came out with the win, leaving the Country Gals (Eva Angus, Edith Irvine, Loretta Hartnell, and Jose Balcewich) in fourth.
The 4-Widows (Kari Upton, Mary Vandenbrand, Vicki Decaire, and Kay Neilson) were fifth, followed by Just for Fun (Len Jordens, Mary Jordens, Lois Labelle, and Shirley Pattison).
When asked how he did at bowling, Merv Alberts replied, “I did not make too many shots. Too many ladies around, could not concentrate.”
Awards were given out by co-ordinator Mollie Crozier, assisted by Jose Balcewich. They included sense of humour (Mollie Crozier), most unique roll (Annie Armstrong), best stick bowler (Marg Leveridge), and best sportsmanship (Maurice McMillan).
Scorekeepers Donna Morrish and Dorothy Sylvester were kept busy with statistics.
It’s worthy to note that 97-year-old Maurice McMillan never misses carpet bowling if his health permits. “So far, so good” he said. “I am amazed and thankful for my health.”
He also attends most Golden Age Manor functions.
