With some degree of rainfall in the forecast today and tomorrow, the forest fire hazard is expected to remain in the “low” to “moderate” range for the next few days as this latest weather system moves across the region.
FireRangers are using this low period in activity to refresh their equipment, complete fire reports, and complete mandatory training, such a certification in the use of chainsaws and the safe operation of boats, the Ministry of Natural Resources’ Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services reported.
There are 35 active fires in Northwestern Ontario, of which 32 are being monitored.
Minimal fire behaviour has been reported over the last few days.
To date, there have been 272 fires in the Northwest Region, charring 38,990.6 hectares in all.
Provincially, there have been 436 forest fires so far this year, consuming a combined area of 40,770.0 ha.
This is well below the 10-year average for Ontario, which is 687 fires to date covering a total combined area of 122,339.0 ha.
