A Manitoba man has been fined $1,200 for violations under the Ontario Fishery Regulations.
Leslie Colmer pleaded guilty and was fined $1,200 for fishing for walleye during the closed season.
Court heard that on Aug. 19, conservation officers conducted a fisheries inspection of Colmer while he was angling on Shoal Lake and determined he had caught and released walleye that day.
He was warned about targeting walleye out of season.
Then on Sept. 2, conservation officers conducted a fisheries patrol on Shoal Lake and spotted Colmer angling from a boat.
He caught and released three walleye, then caught and retained one.
Shoal Lake has a sensitive walleye population and is closed to walleye fishing year-round.
Justice of the Peace John Guthrie heard the case May 1 in Kenora.
The ministry reminds the public that species-specific closures are in place to protect the fishery.
In addition, it is illegal to attempt to catch fish when their season is closed–even if the intent is to release them.
