Wagon train planned

Several local draft horse owners are planning a fun weekend and potluck next Saturday (Sept. 15) starting at the Harold and Karen Kellar residence in Devlin.
Anyone interested in going on an old-fashioned “wagon train” is encouraged to come out.
“The last time we planned an event like this was probably 15 years ago,” said Karen Kellar, who is co-organizing the event. “The local draft and saddle horse clubs got together and travelled from Devlin to the Dance Hall, where we had a potluck and social evening.
“Everyone had a great time and we always wanted to do it again.”
After talking it over with several other “teamsters” during the fall fair in Emo last month, the Kellars, along with Les and Erin Caul of Devlin, started planning the event.
“Right now, we’ve got a team coming from Kenora, as well as several from the district, including Stratton and Devlin,” noted Kellar.
“We’re also inviting anyone that wants to ride along with their saddle horses to come out, as well,” she added.
The plan is to meet up at the Kellar residence on Cross Road (off Highway 613 N) and head out shortly after 9 a.m. (weather permitting).
Taking back roads most of the way, the wagon train will arrive in Dance later in the afternoon, where a potluck is planned at the hall, Kellar explained.
“You don’t have to ride on a wagon, or ride your horse to attend the potluck,” she stressed. “All you need to do is bring something to share.”
The plan is for anyone interested to stay overnight at the hall and then head back to the Kellar residence Sunday morning.
Accommodations for the horses also will be available.
There will be a small cost to go on the ride.
“We don’t really know what to charge,” admitted Kellar. “There is a cost to rent the hall, and we just want to collect enough to pay for the rental.”
