Throughout the weekend, Voyageurs National Park continued to actively manage the fire that began on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 2 on the east end of the Kabetogama Peninsula.
A 20-person crew from the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center (MIFC), a 10-person park crew, and a strike team leader have been assigned to work on the fire.
Terry Severson, the park’s fire management officer and incident commander (IC), reported the fire is 50 percent contained and he expects full containment by Friday (Aug. 10).
Severson plans to keep the MIFC crew through tomorrow (Aug. 9). The park crew will continue to actively manage and monitor the area.
The fire has burned 58 acres to date.
For park visitor safety, the temporary closure announced last Friday (Aug. 3) is still in place. The closed area includes the shoreline from Mica Bay Beach east to the Kettle Portage site.
Mica Island campsite also is closed.
