Victims identified in fatal Hwy 17A crash

(KENORA, ON) – Members of the Kenora Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), attended a two-motor vehicle collision (MVC) at Clearwater Bay on Highway 17A.

At 12:00 p.m. on Friday December 9, 2022, the OPP were dispatched to a head on MVC on Highway 17A at Clearwater Bay between a Tractor Trailer Unit (TTU) and a half tonne truck. Police, fire, and ambulance attended. The driver of the TTU was taken to hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. The two occupants of the half tonne truck, 51-year-old Colin Clay and 21-year-old Jonathan Martens, both of Steinbach, MB were pronounced dead at the scene.

The highway was shut down to allow the OPP Technical Collision Investigation Member to assist with the investigation.

COCAINE SEIZURE

(IGNACE, ON) – A traffic stop on Highway 17 has resulted in a seizure of suspected cocaine and the arrest of one individual.

On December 12, 2022, at approximately 4:46 p.m. officers with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Ignace Detachment conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle travelling west bound on Highway 17 in the Town of Ignace. Further investigation led officers to locating approximately 360 grams of suspected cocaine with a street value of approximately $54,000.

As a result of the investigation, a 32 years-old Thunder Bay man has been arrested and charged with Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine.

The accused was scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice – Kenora Regional Bail Court on December 13, 2022, to answer to the above charge.

SIGNIFICANT DRUG BUST

(SIOUX LOOKOUT, ON) A search warrant executed in Sioux Lookout has resulted in two individuals being arrested and charged with numerous offences.

On Wednesday, December 7, 2022, Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Sioux Lookout and Dryden Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), along with Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant on a residence on King Street in Sioux Lookout. 

As a result of the warrant, officers seized a large quantity of illicit drugs including Cocaine, Methamphetamine, and Oxycodone, with an approximate street value of $452,740, and approximately $3,300 in cash.

Two televisions and a fetal heart rate monitor were also recovered from the residence, which had been reported stolen.

A joint force of OPP and NAPS resulted in significant charges laid against two women in Sioux Lookout.

Two women from Sioux Lookout, ages 33 and 29 have been charged with; Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking Methamphetamine, Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking Cocaine, Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking Oxycodone, and Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000

The 33-year-old was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sioux Lookout on January 10, 2023. The other woman was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on December 15, 2022, to answer to the charges.

Hwy 102 COLLISION

(THUNDER BAY, ON) – On Dec 8, 2022, at 12:39 pm, members of the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Thunder Bay Fire Department and Superior North EMS responded to a report of a single motor vehicle collision on Highway #102, just east of Law Road, west of Thunder Bay.

Investigation revealed that a westbound Tractor Trailer Unit lost control, crossed the centre line and entered the eastbound ditch, rolling and striking a hydro pole. Synergy North was dispatched to the scene. The driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver was subsequently charged with Careless Driving contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

The highway remained open with only a single lane while emergency responders attended to the scene.
