Megan Veniot was crowned as the 2010 Emo Fair queen following the talent portion of the annual pageant last night at the Emo arena.
Elysia Huitikka was named First Princess, and also captured the Dorothy Bonot Memorial Award for leadership, promptness, and a willingness to help others.
Hillary Brown was honoured as Second Princess, and also chosen by her fellow contestants as “Miss Congeniality.”
Alyssa Mutz was the fourth contestant in this year’s pageant.
Prior to the crowning, the four young women entertained the crowd on hand. Mutz sang an original song (“Will You Dance With Me?”) while Huitikka performed a live action version of the popular YouTube video, “The Evolution of Dance.”
Veniot performed a dance, choreographed by Chantel Spuzak of Dancemakers, to Beyoncé’s “Halo,” with Brown playing Coldplay’s “The Scientist” on piano, accompanied by Drew Donald on guitar and vocals.
The event judges last night were Krista Kellar, Tammy LeBlanc, Diane Nordstrom, and Sadie Smith.
The four contestants were scored in several categories overall, including their banners, interviews, fashion, floats, and entertainment.
They received a host of prizes either bought by the fair board or donated by district businesses.
The evening also featured extra entertainment from 2009 Emo Fair queen Taylor Pelepetz, 2009 First Princess Marissa Kinnear, 2009 Second Princess Tasha-Lynn McNally, Maverick Judson (who also was sound man), and Isaac Firth.
Miss Teen Northwestern Ontario Felicia Schmutz spoke about self-esteem and sang a song she wrote, “Love From Above.”
The evening also included a humourous skit about “pageantry boot camp” by Dale Allan and Julianna Clink.
Veniot, whose sponsor is Tim Hortons, Huitikka (Dairy Queen), Brown (Circle S Ranch), and Mutz (Dev-Lynne’s) also will participate in tomorrow’s Emo Fair parade, which starts at noon in front of the Emo Health Centre and ends in front of the grandstand.
Also yesterday, Duncan King and Hailey Bragg were crowned the 2010 Emo Fair mini-king and queen prior to the event for the queen contestants.
The other mini-king contestant was Liam McEvoy while the other mini-queen hopefuls were Mya Hamilton, Mackenzie Hammond, and Adrianna McCoy.
Pelepetz interviewed the mini-king and queen contestants.
